Sherwood Rowland discovered that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were widely used in refrigeration and aerosol products, were destroying the ozone layer in the Earth's atmosphere. Their research showed that the release of these chemicals was causing a hole in the ozone layer, which would have severe consequences for human health and the environme
